We have to get along with so many people in our lives, all in various states of health and unhealth. Deep down they may have forgotten what it feels like to not be unhealthy.

Whether or not they are ready to work on themselves, here are some practical tips and insights for how to affirm, support, encourage, and deal with the people in your life, according to their Enneagram type.

Type 1s are spectacular people to have on a team!

Their wisdom, logical approaches, and eye for detail make them great project leaders and team contributors. But with great skill can come great struggle. Here’s how you can help encourage your Type 1 employee or teammate.

Type 1s hate making mistakes. Their inner critic is constantly on their case about what to do and how to do it right. When they don’t live up to the critic’s standards, all they hear is inner abuse.

  • Try not to add to the critic. They already know they’ve done something wrong, but they might not be able to face anything beyond what they’re already experiencing from the critic.

    • If you have to deliver feedback, ask them how they’re feeling. If it’s not a great moment, pick it back up at another time. If you want a Type 1 to learn from their mistake without criticizing themselves, they need time to work through their feelings about the mistake.

    • In these moments you can give them their space to sort it out. You can also help them focus on what went right. Especially if you can name good that came out of the mistake. Even if it’s just a little bit, it’s important for the Type 1 to focus on the good, instead of the bad.
